Transportation to Barra

There are 3 main routes to Barra and it will really depend on how much time you have available and how much of Scotland you would like to see on your way.

Fly from Glasgow – The flight from Glasgow to Barra takes about one hour, it is the quickest route. Barra Airport is the only airport in the world with scheduled flights landing on a beach so if you like to fly then this a fantastic experience. The plane is a twin otter which seats 19; however, in practice accommodation is limited by the need to carry the weight of both passengers and fuel, so a few less than this tends to be the limit. Also, if you do fly, be sure to know the baggage allowances as they are not the same as the large planes.

Take a Ferry from Oban – Whether you drive, take a bus or train to get to Oban, there are links on this website’s Travel Guide as well as Visit Scotland – Getting Around Scotland

From Oban, you catch a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Barra.  The ferry takes you up the Sound of Mull and across the Minch to Barra passing some other islands on the way.  It is a relaxing journey and a great chance to unwind and breath in the fresh air.  You will pass local fishermen at work and be able to watch the birds and if you are lucky some of our marine life too.  This journey take approximately 5 hours.

If you are driving , please book the ferry at your earliest convenience so not to miss space on it. They are very busy in the summertime. If you have never driven in the UK or just not onto a ferry, there is more information on the Travel Guide

REMINDER: Accommodations, car hires and/or flights should be booked as early as possible to avoid disappointment of not having something available. For example, some hotels and BnBs on Barra are taking reservations now but if you were flying from Glasgow to Barra, Loganair does not take reservations until at least one year prior to the departure date.
