MIGRATION

Migrations which Contributed to the Formation of the People of Scotland

If we look back to the period of the formation of the Scottish people as we know it (800 -1200 AD), there were people who arrived in Scotland from Norway, Northumbria, Saxony /Jutland. Ireland and Normandy. These people adopted Scottish family names in many cases and adopted Scottish heritage and culture. The migration of families has continued over time with some moving to avoid conflicts from wars, seeking protection, seeking employment, escaping poverty and escaping persecution. Scottish families have migrated to many countries during the period of 1700 to 1945.

The Scottish diaspora consists of Scottish people who emigrated from Scotland to other countries as well as their descendants. The countries with the largest number of family descendants are - United States of America, Canada, Australia, England, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, France and Poland.
